“Hypnotherapy is just like having a heart to heart chat with your subconscious mind, gently guiding it towards beneficial change. In the relaxing state of hypnosis, your mind opens up to new possibilities, allowing you to shed old beliefs like a butterfly emerging from it’s cocoon”

Frequently Asked Questions About Habit Change Hypnotherapy
-
Willpower alone often fails because it operates at a conscious level while habits, patterns and other automatic responses are formed in the subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy for habit change encourages a state of deep relaxation where the subconscious mind is more receptive to change and the old unconscious patterns can be replaced with new and more positive responses.
-
Hypnotherapy supports habit change by guiding you into a state of deep relaxation where your conscious mind takes a back seat. This allows for direct communication with your subconscious mind aka the part of your brain where habits, cravings and automatic behaviours are stored.
In this receptive state, we can:
Identify the Root Trigger: Uncover the real reason for the habit.
Update Old Beliefs: Replace outdated beliefs (like "I need a cigarette to relax") with new, empowering ones ("I am calm and in control").
Create New Pathways: Rehearse new and healthier behaviours, making them feel natural and automatic.
Essentially, we are reprogramming the habit at its source, making the change feel easy and lasting.
-
Hypnotherapy is so effective for habit change because most unwanted habits are not conscious choices; they are subconscious responses to emotional triggers. Solutions such as diets and willpower all focus on the conscious mind, which is why they often fail long-term.
Hypnotherapy goes directly to the root of the problem. It works on the emotional driver behind the habit so that the need for the habit is broken and replaced.
-
Diets and willpower focus on restriction and fighting your cravings, which is often unsustainable. Hypnotherapy for weight loss works on a completely different level by changing your relationship with food and your body.
Instead of focusing on what you can't eat, we focus on things like:
Resolving Emotional Eating: Addressing the triggers that lead to overeating.
Changing Unhelpful Cravings: Reducing cravings for unhealthy foods and increasing the desire for nutritious ones.
Improving Self-Image: Building a positive body image and sense of self-worth from the inside out.
It’s about changing your mindset so that healthy choices become easy and automatic rather than a constant struggle.
-
It’s very likely that previous attempts to quit smoking didn't address the subconscious part of the addiction.
Hypnotherapy is often successful for people who have tried everything else to stop smoking because it targets the psychological addiction and breaks subconscious links so that the urge to smoke can be eliminated for good.
-
Quitting vaping works on the same principles as quitting smoking. While the physical addiction to nicotine is part of it, the much stronger component is the behavioural habit eg the hand-to-mouth action, the association with breaks or the social ritual.
Hypnotherapy helps by dismantling what is keeping the vaping habit in place. We work to break the triggers and find healthier ways to meet the needs that vaping was fulfilling, making it much easier to let go of the habit without feeling deprived.
-
Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach that works differently from traditional programs like AA or rehab. While programs like AA provide crucial community support and a structured framework, hypnotherapy works on your subconscious drivers for drinking.
It focuses on changing the desire to drink by addressing the underlying triggers and building a new identity as someone who is in control of their choices.
-
Yes, emotional eating is an area where hypnotherapy is incredibly effective. Hypnotherapy helps you to identify the specific feelings that trigger the desire to binge and gives you new, healthier tools to manage those emotions. We work to break the link between "feeling bad" and "eating," empowering you to find comfort and self-soothing from within.
-
Yes, there is a very strong and well-documented link between trauma and addictive habits and behaviours. When you experience trauma, your nervous system can become stuck in a state of high alert (anxiety or panic) or shutdown (numbness or depression).
Addictive behaviours often develop as a subconscious attempt to self-medicate and temporarily escape these painful feelings. As a trauma-informed hypnotherapist, I can help you to safely process the underlying trauma, which in turn reduces the need for the addictive behaviour as a coping mechanism.
-
Procrastination is often a subconscious protective strategy driven by an underlying fear. Hypnotherapy helps by getting to the root of that fear. We work to update the limiting beliefs that are fuelling the procrastination and reprogramming these beliefs at a subconscious level to release the mental block and unlock your natural drive and motivation.
-
Yes, hypnotherapy is an excellent approach for improving sleep.
Hypnotherapy for insomnia works by:
Training Your Brain to Relax: Teaching you how to consciously shift your brainwaves into a calm, relaxed state conducive to sleep.
Calming the Nervous System: Addressing underlying anxiety or stress that may be keeping you in "fight or flight" mode.
Breaking Negative Associations: Releasing the anxiety you may feel about not sleeping, which itself can keep you awake.
-
When you're in or have left an abusive relationship, your nervous system is in a constant state of hypervigilance. Even if you are now physically safe, your nervous system can remain "stuck" in this high-alert state, leading to intense anxiety, emotional turmoil, and symptoms of C-PTSD.
Unhealthy habits often increase because they are a subconscious attempt to self-soothe this and provide a temporary moment of relief or numbness. Healing the underlying trauma is the key to reducing the need for these coping mechanisms and hypnotherapy is a proven tool for doing this.
-
The goal of hypnotherapy is to create permanent, lasting change. Because we are not just suppressing the habit but actually changing the underlying subconscious belief system that drives it, the results can be lasting and sustainable.
Once your subconscious mind accepts a new, healthier way of being, it becomes your new "default program." You no longer have to use willpower because your automatic desire has changed. For many people, this means they are free from the old habit for good.
